I have never really cared about the Invaders, although I do respect and understand their place in the larger Marvel Universe. To give some context, The Invaders were Marvel’s first superhero team existing in the Golden Age of comics, and being made up of the superheroes Marvel’s predecessor Timely Comics had at that time.(Although being retconned into existence in the late 60s)The team consists of Captain America, his sidekick Bucky (eventually the Winter Soldier), Namor (one of the first mutants and the King of Atlantis), Jim Hammond (the original Human Torch who is an android and not the Johnny Storm Fantastic Four version), and his sidekick Toro (also an android) as well as a host of other characters including Spitfire and Union Jack. The basic premise of the story is that Namor has killed Americans on US soil and is acting like more of a jerk (than usual anyway), so its up to the Invaders to try and talk Namor out of invading the surface world before the Avengers get to him first. There’s a lot of twists and turns to make this an entertaining and fairly quick read.

But let’s be honest I bought this series for one reason; Chip Zdarsky. After reading his spectacular love letter to Spider-Man, Spider- Man: Life Story (which I will review at some point) I have become a big fan of his, and have made it a point to buy everything he’s written. He’s one of the best writers in the comic book industry and continues to crank out quality stories that sadly go unnoticed by many. The art duties are shared between Carlos Magno and Butch Guice. Carlos Magno handles the present-day storyline and Butch Guice handles the WWII flashbacks. No disrespect to Mr. Magno, but I prefer Butch Guice’s pencils. I first became aware of his art in Ed Brubaker’s seminal run on Captain America, and its just as good now.

All in all this is a great series, and definitely the best Invaders story in a good long while, and at only 12 issues or 2 trade paperbacks that you could easily get of Amazon, or Cheap Graphic Novels for a pretty good price. You don’t have to know anything about any of the characters to jump in as this series gives you all the information you’ll need. So check out The Invaders by Chip Zdarsky, you won’t regret it.
